What the science says
Karl von Frisch decoded the waggle dance in the 1940s: a returning forager walks a short straight line while vibrating, and the angle of that line (relative to gravity in the dark hive) tells hive-mates the direction to food relative to the sun. The duration of the waggle tells them the distance. In 2018 a robotic bee performed the dance and real bees flew to the destination it named — the first successful two-way exchange with another species in its own signalling system.
Angle
The direction of the waggle run relative to vertical maps to the flight angle relative to the sun.
Duration
The length of the waggle run encodes distance. Roughly 1 second of waggle ≈ 750 metres of flight.
Vigor
Faster, more emphatic waggles suggest a richer food source. Motivation, not location.
Round dance
For food closer than ~50m the waggle collapses into a simple circle — direction is unspecified.
